Microprocessor Extensions for Wireless Communications

This report shows the advantages of instruction set extensions that can added to current generation microprocessors to accelerate the implementation of wireless communication algorithms. Algorithms proposed for implementation for future wireless communications need extremely sophisticated, highcomplexity algorithms in order to provide support for services such as extremely high data rates (in Mbps), Multimedia and Quality-of-Service(QoS). This makes their real-time implementation difficult on current generation microprocessors. However, there exists massive parallelism in these algorithms and bit level computations which can be exploited by providing support for bit-level parallelism in current generation microprocessors. We study the characteristics of wireless communication algorithms and show that by providing bit-level support, we can acheive significant speedup (greater than 7X) for operations occuring in wireless communication algorithms.
